Details of the 140 nation-wide public rallies to mark Aman Ittehad’s Solidarity Day 2012 were presented to the media at a well-attended press conference held at the National Press Club in Islamabad. Key points of the joint press statement were presented. Rashida Dohad addressed the press conference. She was accompanied by Naeem Mirza, Maryam Bibi, Raziq Fahim, Naveed Shinwari and Zahoor Awan.

Press Conference Quetta

A press conference was held at the Quetta Press Club on 31st December, 2011. Mr Mauladad among others addressed the press conference, sharing the details of 140 rallies scheduled nationwide including specific plans for the rallies to be held in different areas of Balochistan. Mr. Mauladad also stated that Aman ittehad strives to connect citizens across the province and the country.

Press Conference Peshawar

A Press Conference was held at the Peshawar Press Club on 31st December, 2011. Prof. Dr. Sarfaraz and Dr. Ijaz Khan of the Peshawar University addressed the press conference. Details of the 140 nation-wide public rallies to mark Aman Ittehad’s Solidarity Day 2012 were presented alongwith specific plans for the rally scheduled in Peshawar. The need for platforms such as Aman Ittehad was highlighted.

Press Conference Lahore

A press conference was held at the Lahore Press Club on 30th December, 2011. Mr. Irfan Mufti addressed the press conference. He highlighted the purpose of the Solidarity Day 2012. He also read the joint press statement which called upon all state institutions to play their due role within the parameters defined by the Constitution of Pakistan.

Aman Ittehad Meeting – Islamabad

An Aman Ittehad meeting in Islamabad was held on 26th December 2011 at Omar Asghar Khan Foundation’s office. Participants reviewed a 20 minute film: Building a Nation that Cares to review Aman Ittehad’s journey from 2009 todate.

It was suggested that Aman Ittehad should strategically use elections 2013 to mobilize public participation in the electoral process. It was also suggested that it should engage with political parties, review their manifestoes and draw comparisons with the Peoples Resolution and the public debate held on the Social Contract. Moreover, Aman Ittehad’s message, it was decided, would be projected through activities such as planned district meetings to be organized by the Pakistan Workers Federation.

For Solidarity Day 2012, a public rally will be organized from the National Press Club at 3:00 pm.

Aman Ittehad Provincial Meeting – Balochistan

An Aman Ittehad Provincial meeting-Balochistan was held on Tuesday 20th December 2011 at the Boys Scouts Association in Quetta. A review of Aman Ittehad’s journey from 2009 to now was done through a 20 minute film: Building a Nation that Cares. Aman Ittehad’s efforts to raise public demand for peace in Balochistan was appreciated. It was agreed that continued activism is required, and that it is necessary to strengthen Aman Ittehad by extending connections within citizens and citizen groups across Balochistan. Meetings with journalists, traders and lawyers were also required. A suggestion was endorsed to hold a nation-wide meeting in Balochistan to discuss the insecurities faced by journalists.

Subsequently, another planning meeting was held on 22nd December in which 14 locations were confirmed where public rallies will be organized to observe Solidarity Day 2012 on Sunday 1^st January 2012.

Aman Ittehad Provincial Meeting – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

An Aman Ittehad Provincial meeting-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was held on Wednesday 14th December 2011 at the Khwendo Kor office in Peshawar. A 20 minute film: Building a Nation that Cares was shown that presents details of Aman Ittehad’s journey from 2009 todate. Commending the work of Aman Ittehad, the participants decided that continued activism was absolutely critical in the present context. Populist jingoism must be rejected, and the discourse of peace adopted at all levels. A followup meeting was held on 19th December to plan activities for Solidarity Day 2012. 31 locations have been finalized for KPK, and the number of locations for FATA have increased from last year’s 11 to 29.

Aman Ittehad Provincial Meeting – Punjab

An Aman Ittehad Provincial meeting-Punjab was held on Thursday 8th December 2011 at the Shirkat Gah office in Lahore. A review of Aman Ittehad’s efforts from 2009 was done through a 20-minute film: Building a Nationthat Cares. The achievements todate were commended, and it was decided that continued efforts were needed to maintain the momentum of activism. At the meeting a resolution was adopted condemning the murder of human rights activist Mr. Zarteef Khan Afridi in Khyber Agency.

Following this meeting a series of planning meetings were held to discuss organizational details of rallies in different parts of the province and also in Lahore. It is expected that rallies will be held in each of the province’s districts. It was also decided that a press conference will be organized in Lahore prior to the Solidarity Day 2012.

Aman Ittehad provincial Meeting – Sindh

An Aman Ittehad Provincial meeting-Sindh was held on Monday 28th November 2011 at the Hyderabad Press Club. A review of Aman Ittehad’s journey from 2009 was done through a 20 minute film: Building a Nation that Cares. Participants reiterated the need for platforms such as Aman Ittehad and committed to making it stronger. Increasing insecurity, especially among religious minorities, was highlighted. In particular, the murder of Hindu doctors in Shikarpur was condemned. It was decided that all-out efforts will be made to extend the outreach of Solidarity Day 2012 in Sindh. Subsequently, a series of planning meetings were held in Hyderabad and Karachi. Public rallies in 25 locations have been planned for Solidarity Day 2012 across Sindh.
