People’s Assemblies
Leading up to Peace Week, from the 1st of March to the 15th of March, a series of people’s assemblies – Awam aur Aman – were held in more than 76 locations across Pakistan. They seek citizen perspectives on a set of key questions framed around the issues included in the Murree Peace Statement. These voices and views define the vision of a social contract between citizens and the state, and were endorsed during the Peace Week.
The Aman Ittehad through such continued efforts is seeking to bring people together, united in the belief that ensuring the wellbeing of citizens is the only way to ensure the wellbeing of the state.
“Let us make a state that cares for its people”
Gearing towards Peace Week that is being celebrated from March 16, 2010 till March 23, 2010, Aman Ittehad is holding 13 People’s Assemblies in 13 different cities around Pakistan. Following the theme of Awam aur Aman, the Assemblies will be held between March 4, 2010 till March 9, 2010 – the objective is to develop grassroots ownership of the movement for peace, justice and equality.
Because it is important to facilitate spreading the message of peace and understanding, the People’s Assemblies will focus on crucial issues faced by citizens in order to obtain their perspective/s on key issues in addition to them expressing their views on peace.
These efforts are directed towards paving the way for renewed hope in the future. The citizens of Pakistan should commit to defining the basis of a journey towards a life of equity, dignity and justice – as a true reflection of peoples aspirations.
